Book swap (like Wife Swap, but for books).

I just found this PaperBack Swap site through my Ideal Bite (all things eco- and green) email newsletter. It allows you to get a free book once you mail one to someone else. I think it's a great idea, and maybe some of you are interested!

I know we all get attached to our books, but maybe it's time we released ourselves of Blackbird (Priya, you could finally get rid of the one left at your house), Dante Club, Rock and a Hard Place, or other 'favorites' from years past (no offense to those who chose these ;-))

1000 novel ideas

According to the Guardian.uk, we've picked some of the 1000 "best" (or at least most read-worthy) novels, including Love in the Time of Cholera and Anna Karenina (can you tell I only looked at the love story part of the list?)

We might also find some inspiration for other classics (dates are listed for each book) for future months using that list or one provided by the Cincinatti Public Library

See you all tonight at the Berndt's!

Movie Night Misfire

I looked into movies for this Thursday, and the Time Traveler's Wife is not out and Secret Life of Bees is not playing anywhere in the near metro area. So, anyone else have suggestions? Maybe if we have an estimate for how many people wanted to go out, we could judge whether we should pick a movie to go see, rent a movie, or do something else in general as a Book Club meeting substitute!

Comments? Suggestions? Blog it! (Or email a response, at least to me) :)

December and January News

This just in...

On Thursday, December 11th, Book Club will get together for a movie night out on the town. We are thinking of catching The Time Traveler's Wife, or if that is not out yet, The Secret Life of Bees. There will be more details to follow. But for now, save the date for a 7pm-ish movie!

For January, we will read the romance classic, Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. WARNING: this book is almost 900 pages, which is why we'll have 2 months to read. Courtney will host in January... again, more details on the time/date to follow.

Keep your thinking caps on for classics that we might pick for February and March.

Hope to see you all in December, and for those of you we'll miss- have a wonderful holiday season!

Some notes from last week...

Hey girls!
Here are some of the books that got brought up in discussion last week... A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini (a follow-up to Kite Runner, about an Afghan experience through two female perspectives) and What is the What by Dave Eggers (about the Sudanese civil war and the "Lost Boys")

Also, the book following October's pick (The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse by Louise Erdrich) is Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller.

So, I've got Monday, October 6th at Heidi's place as the next book club meeting. I don't believe we set up November's time/date yet.
Happy reading...
-Lindsey :)
