Movie Night Misfire
I looked into movies for this Thursday, and the Time Traveler's Wife is not out and Secret Life of Bees is not playing anywhere in the near metro area. So, anyone else have suggestions? Maybe if we have an estimate for how many people wanted to go out, we could judge whether we should pick a movie to go see, rent a movie, or do something else in general as a Book Club meeting substitute!

December and January News
This just in...
On Thursday, December 11th, Book Club will get together for a movie night out on the town. We are thinking of catching The Time Traveler's Wife, or if that is not out yet, The Secret Life of Bees. There will be more details to follow. But for now, save the date for a 7pm-ish movie!
For January, we will read the romance classic, Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. WARNING: this book is almost 900 pages, which is why we'll have 2 months to read. Courtney will host in January... again, more details on the time/date to follow.
Keep your thinking caps on for classics that we might pick for February and March.
Hope to see you all in December, and for those of you we'll miss- have a wonderful holiday season!

Some notes from last week...
Hey girls!

Also, the book following October's pick (The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse by Louise Erdrich) is Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller.
Here are some of the books that got brought up in discussion last week... A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini (a follow-up to Kite Runner, about an Afghan experience through two female perspectives) and What is the What by Dave Eggers (about the Sudanese civil war and the "Lost Boys")

Also, the book following October's pick (The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse by Louise Erdrich) is Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller.
So, I've got Monday, October 6th at Heidi's place as the next book club meeting. I don't believe we set up November's time/date yet.
Happy reading...

Birchbark Books & Louise Erdrich
Hi everyone,
Thanks again for coming over this week, I really enjoyed having you all here. And merci beaucoup to Carrie for co-hosting and Amanda for jumping right in with those delicious cucumber sandwiches.
I have read the first two chapters of "The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse" and I think I might have to hide it from myself because otherwise I might not get any work done—instead just sit and read and read and read. I'm loving it so far!
We talked about whether we might be able to meet over at her bookshop for our discussion, so I called over there and the very nice woman said that there is not seating or space in the bookshop for us, but that there is a coffee shop/deli attached through a side door and that we could meet there. However, both the bookshop and the coffeeshop close at 6pm on weekdays and 5pm on weekends, so that might complicate matters for us going there as a group.

And now... September
We've got a great book ready for our September discussion... Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. This was Carrie's pick, so we hope she can make it to our discussion!
The plan so far is to meet at Kristin H's place on September 9th. The hope is that all of our resident teachers will have enough time to get through the workshops and first few days of school before we meet. AND- this is a perfect book for the start of school... read about it to find out why ;)
We also chose October's local author, Louise Erdrich... Kristin H's pick. She'll let us know which book we are going to read at a later date.
See you in September!

Lets Gear Up for June!
Are you ladies as PUMPED as I am for our 2 year anniversary bash?? Well, we have some business to attend to before the date.
First, we need to vote. I put up the 3 categories on the top, right side of the blog. Email me your responses. To vote for the first 2 categories, you will need to have attended or read books for around 5 months- so that all votes arent the most recent books. And, you can vote on any book from Peyton Place to Blindness. Here are more details on the categories:

To vote for the first 2 categories, you will need to have attended or read books for around 5 months- so that all votes arent the most recent books. And, you can vote on any book from Peyton Place to Blindness. Here are more details on the categories:
- Best Book: Simply put. What was your fav?
- Best Discussion: What discussion do you remember most? Was is hilarious- or did it really make you think, or both!
- Timothy Treadwell Award: These are the miscellaneous awards, and everyone votes on this one. Timothy Treadwell was loco for bears (check out Grizzly Man if you missed it). Who or what book can you nominate for being funny or memorable- just like Treadwell? Send in as many submissions as you like for this one- we can go around and read each of them (and maybe Heidi will have cirtificates made up for these). Here are some examples, but go anywhere you like with this one: I nominate _____ for best newbie award. I nominate _____ for the hardest house/apt to find award. I nominate ____ for never/always reading the book award.

Alrighty, moving onto other business. Ange nominated herself to arrange the tickets to Sex and the City. She'll be looking for an RSVP list closer to the date.
Kate- were you going to put together a food/drink sign-up? Also, were Andy, Mike and Kevin volunteered to drive us to the movie?
Of course, ladies, think of what Sex and the City character you'd like to show up as. It will be fun to guess... or even do a catwalk...
So remember to send in your votes to dyer_lindsey@yahoo.com And- read up on Summer Sisters for chats over cosmos :)

Directions to April Book Club
It’s a little hard to find, so here are some (hopefully helpful) directions. Get yourself to Ford Parkway in St. Paul, from there you’ll go South on Finn Street (between Cleveland Ave. and Cretin Ave.). When you turn South at the Finn Street stop light you’ll be going into a strip mall parking lot (Lund’s, Noodles) head to the back, passed Old Country Buffet. Once you’ve passed Old Country Buffet head to the left side of the parking lot. You’ll see a little light post in between some brick townhouses. Park where ever and head that direction. My townhouse is down the sidewalk by the light post. It’s the 4th one in on the left side. Call me if you get lost!

Spring/Summer Schedule
Alright ya'll. We did some major planning at the last book club. Here be the deets:

May: We'll read Summer Sisters by Judy Blume in May. This book will gear us up for the Sex in the City party we'll have in June. We will not meet in May, but will meet early June.
June: 2 year anniversary of BOOK CLUB! We will get together at someone's house (Kate maybe?) to drink Cosmos and be fabulous. Here, we will hand out our awards (more info on this to come). Then, we will take off for the theater to see the new Sex in the City movie. We'll discuss the date for this during our April meeting.

July: We'll read The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory for July, Sharon's pick. There is also a new movie for this book, so maybe we could watch it ?

Book Club in a Bag
Here is a cool library service that I just learned about... I believe this is active at both Ramsey and Hennepin Counties... To view the offered titles (there are many) click here It would be nice to try this out in the future if a title matches.
Ramsey County Library introduces an easy way to start your own book club. We provide the books and all the information needed to have a great book discussion; all you need to add are the readers.
Each Book Club in a Bag tote contains ten copies of the selected book and a notebook with discussion questions, information on the author and suggested additional reading. The bags are checked out for six weeks and can be requested for pickup at any of our seven libraries.

March book club
According to my records, ladies, we have book club scheduled for Easter evening. I'm not sure if this is something we want to rethink, or if it's okay with people . . . either way, I will be unable to make it, but that's not a big deal! Just wanted to bring it up as a discussion point!

Grizzly Man Discussion
So, I found this "rivoting" discussion on IMDB about Grizzly man and they were questioning if the girlfriends menstral cycle caused the attack. Funny reading- enjoy!
